Democracy......................

I always fail to understand democracy, i read in my civil textbooks of yester years that its a system of government for the people,by the people and etc etc.I am not sure if they have changed any definitions as yet. When thousands and thousands of people(educated and necessay citizens of india at that), protesting against a proposal initiated to give admissions on higher learning centers by the caste into which they were born into, are not given any respect, how can we call ourselves democratic?

Is the voice of one 'peoples representative' more final than the voice one million people affected by his voice?

Shouldnt the original drafters of the constitution have considered the contigency of these representatives not passing any laws agaisnt themselves? If they can pass laws according to their whims and fancies, i feel we should take a referendum for important policy decisions to be voted by non-political ordinary citizens with intellegence.I know, here again there is the problem of finding such people, casue there again the minister might require quota .But in case its money well spent than a normal election.

History repeats itself, even if it does so very slowly, about 50 years ago ,the British were compelled to leave when people they crushed rose against them, the current scenario is no different, but people at high position seem to be myopic to a dangerous extend.

As of the forwards say, we should save brand india, before its too late.

But to be more practical , I feel we are no more democratic, its a quasi-dictorial regime which repeats after every five years or should it be lesser???

What you say is trure. but then, if i we go with what you say, that the law makers should listen to what the majority of the people feels, then, pro-reservation supporters will easily outnumber the others. Imagine what would be the case when all the people from vilalges throng the roads as a rally ! should the higher authorities go with them, since they form the majority ??

But in any case, as Paswan had said yesterday, the divide should be based on economic background only in the school/UG levels. If all the people from diff backgrounds get the same kind of ecducation, then they can easily compete on a fair ground for higher education !
There is something called equality in oppurtunities in the fundamental rights.Accepted ,50 years before now , people in the lower strata were not given oppurtunities and they needed help, does introducing new quotas imply the SC/STs are in a good position now??two generations are over, so its time to give oppurtunities for people who were denied rights to education since they didnt come under 'quota' communities....

If this goes on , 50 years from now, people with intellegence, will consider that has an useless assert and more forging of community certificates will continue....

If quotas are implemented , then peopel with brains but no money and in the theoretical upper classess will suffer not just mentally ,but this will be a social injustice.Further more, arent people satisfied with their UG admissions with quota, would they want quota till they die, cant they go out and perform????If this gets implemented in IIT and IIM, they will no longer be IITs and IIMs.
I think quotas with salary bracket would be a better idea,if people want it anyway.Even in rural areas, there are people very rich, even richer than a FC in city.so what steps will they take for that?

There is no point in reacting to this issue. I remember reading an artice in ET where one person had written defending the reservation system with some suggestions. Well, if you read it, I bet you cannot disagree with him! I only wish I could quote the article here.

Don't worry about all these stuff. They ain't gonna change anytime now and maybe they needn't.
May be there are some positive points in this. But the negative points surely outnumbered, i know cases where students get demotivated to work hard ,because they know its not just "working hard" when students who laze around and without seriousness ,get into previleged colleges just by their caste.

Just 2 points
1.",the British were compelled to leave when people they crushed rose against them"
Do you think British left just because people rose against them? Nope. After world war 2, British was depleted, the international opinion at that time too favoured independence to nations. Hence many nations became independent at that time. But sadly the education system in india is corrupted - it says Gandhi and Nehru got us freedom. absolute nonsense - this is still used by Congress party to get votes.

2. Reservations and democracy:
have you voted in the last election? The majority of the people who are in a good position dont vote. look at the minorities - they vote. So they are considered vote banks. Hence the govt does something for their favour. the day voting is made compulsary for all indian citizens, i am sure democracy wud work to its completeness.

And mere words of the protests hardly fetches anything. Actions speaks more than words.
"A nation is affected by inaction of good more than bad deeds of wicked" - ArthaShastra by Kautilya
Action? Just participate in democratic process. Lets vote . Let everyone in our nation participate in democracy - then shall we reach the complete democracy.

True, voting helps, but it alone will not ensure according to me .We got to have more power than just voting once in 5 years

Being a mere spectator is not going to help anyone.
If at all, anything should happen, get into the field and soil your hands.. stones will remian unturned unless everyone starts thinking in the broader sense..
